Why use flexible rogowski coil

Rogowski coils are used primarily for measuring AC current due to their numerous advantages over current transformers (CTs), including flexibility, ease of installation, and high accuracy. They are particularly well-suited for applications requiring high-current measurements, high-frequency response, and in tight spaces or around irregularly shaped conductors.

 

1. Flexibility and Ease of Installation:

Rogowski coils are lightweight, flexible, can be easily wrapped around conductors of various sizes and shapes, even in tight spaces. 

They can be retrofitted easily and are less bulky than traditional CTs, making them ideal for installations in confined areas. 

 

2. High-Frequency Response and Wide Bandwidth: 

Rogowski coils have a wide bandwidth, allowing them to accurately measure currents with very fast rise times, making them ideal for applications involving high-frequency signals and harmonics.

They can handle a wide range of AC frequencies, from 50/60 Hz to kHz and even MHz ranges.

 

3. No Saturation: 

Unlike traditional CTs, Rogowski coils have no iron core to saturate, meaning they maintain linear output even at very high currents.

This makes them suitable for measuring high-current applications like electric power transmission, welding, and pulsed power applications.

 

4. High Accuracy and Precision:

Rogowski coils can achieve high accuracy, often with a 0.5% accuracy rating. 

This makes them ideal for applications where precise current measurements are needed, such as in power quality monitoring and harmonics analysis. 

 

5. Intrinsic Safety and Minimal Load: 

Rogowski coils impose minimal load on the circuit being measured, resulting in lower power loss and preventing damage to the system.
